CLASSIC FUSION BALLOON DOG BY JEFF KOONS

When contemporary art meets haute horlogerie, the form of time can radically change. This is the case with the Hublot Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons, an unprecedented collaboration between the Swiss Maison and one of the most recognizable artists on the contemporary scene.

Inspired by Jeff Koons' iconic Balloon Dog, the new timepiece brings the language of the artist's famous balloon-shaped sculptures into the world of watchmaking, transforming the playful and instantly recognizable character of the work into a three-dimensional horological architecture. A reinterpretation that fosters a dialogue between art, design, materials, and high craftsmanship.

The Classic Fusion according to Jeff Koons

The starting point is the Classic Fusion, one of the collections that best represent Hublot's approach to the fusion of tradition and innovation. For this project, however, its architecture has been completely rethought.

The traditional silhouette of the Classic Fusion, elegant and relatively flat, gives way to curved surfaces, expanded geometries, and convex lines. The 42 mm case appears to be shaped by air pressure, as if it were truly an inflated object. The same principle extends to every element of the watch: from the sapphire crystal to the titanium screws, from the dial to the oscillating weight, and even to the strap.

The result is a sculptural presence that retains the recognizability of the Classic Fusion, reinterpreting it through Koons' visual vocabulary.

Jeff Koons and the Balloon Dog

The collaboration originates from the work Balloon Dog (1994–2000), part of the Celebration series developed by Jeff Koons starting in the mid-nineties.

The subject is seemingly simple: a dog made from a balloon shape. However, Koons transforms it from a fragile, temporary, and playful object into a monumental and permanent sculpture. It is precisely this transition from the ephemeral to the iconic that represents one of the distinctive traits of his artistic research.

In the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog, this same idea is translated through materials, proportions, and finishes. The artist's signature appears on the dial, while the counterweight of the seconds hand features the Balloon Dog shape in bas-relief.

Three interpretations, three materials

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons is available in three different versions, all produced in a limited edition of 200 pieces.

The first interprets the project in polished red anodized aluminum, with red rubber details. The second opts for polished blue anodized aluminum, also paired with rubber in the same shade. The third version features a polished stainless steel case, completed with gray rubber details.

Aluminum was also chosen for its ability to reproduce the intense and vibrant tones associated with Koons' work, while polished steel evokes the reflective effect of his sculptures.

Details that transform the watch into a sculpture

In the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog, every component contributes to creating the "inflated" effect.

The crown, made of aluminum and rubber, evokes the valve used to inflate a balloon. At 10:30, a particular flexible "balloon tail" appears, while the titanium screws feature domed H-shaped heads.

The dial also follows this grammar: full and domed surfaces, three-dimensional appliqués with Super-LumiNova, and Jeff Koons' signature at 6 o'clock. The sapphire crystal itself takes on a convex shape, contributing to the sense of volume that characterizes the entire project.

The strap completes the reinterpretation with a rubber base and a metallic leather insert, worked with an inflated effect and accompanied by tone-on-tone stitching.

Haute Horlogerie and manufacture movement

Behind the sculptural aesthetic lies an equally sophisticated technical construction.

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog is powered by the HUB1710 automatic manufacture caliber, composed of 185 components, with 27 jewels, a frequency of 4 Hz, and a power reserve of 50 hours. The movement features bridges treated with anthracite ruthenium and a polished rhodium-plated oscillating weight, also characterized by a domed effect that echoes the shapes of the case.

The design and production were carried out at the Hublot Manufacture in Nyon, where each component was rethought and crafted to achieve the soft, voluminous geometries required by the project.

A collectible limited edition

The Hublot Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons is produced in only 200 pieces for each version, highlighting its exclusive and collectible nature. The three variants share the same 42 mm architecture and the HUB1710 movement, differing mainly in materials and colors.

More than just a collaboration between an artist and a watchmaking Maison, the project represents a true reinterpretation of the Classic Fusion: time becomes volume, the dial becomes a sculptural surface, and the playful gesture of the balloon transforms into an object destined to last.

A meeting between Hublot, Jeff Koons, and Balloon Dog where contemporary art enters haute horlogerie without losing its irony, while watchmaking technique becomes the instrument to give a new form to an icon of contemporary art.
