Rolex is Worldwide Partner of the Ryder Cup, the 44th edition of which will be held from 29 September to 1 October 2023 in Italy. Created in 1927, the Ryder Cup is one of the most followed sporting events in the world. Every two years, this team tournament pits Europe and the United States against each other. The competition takes place alternately on the two continents. This competition sees the best golfers - expert players and young talents - compete in an exciting head-to-head; each team is led by former champions who act as non-player captains.
THE FORMULA FOR SUCCESS
The Ryder Cup's unique format (three days of competition, doubles and singles, no prize money) creates a spirit of camaraderie and cooperation that transcends the usual rivalries of the professional circuit. The first two days are dedicated to doubles matches. From fourballs (where each player plays their own ball and only their best score counts) to foursomes (teammates take turns playing the same ball), the pairs formed in each team compete in a match play format, each trying to win hole completing it with the fewest number of strokes. At the end of each match, the duo who have won the most holes wins the match and gets a point for their team. Sunday is dedicated to 12 single matches, again in match play format. The first team to accumulate more than 14 points wins the coveted Samuel Ryder trophy. In case of a tie, the trophy is retained by the reigning champion.
THE EMOTION OF THE CUP
With over 200,000 spectators physically present for more than three days of competition and millions of television viewers around the world, the Ryder Cup is an exceptional event in the golf universe.
It brings players and fans together in passionate support of their team, creating an atmosphere unlike any other golf event. The enthusiasm of the crowd encourages the players to give their best, for the good of all. In this spirit, in the 2018 edition in France, Rolex Testimonial Francesco Molinari wrote history by winning all five matches played, four doubles and a single. Before him, no European player had ever achieved this feat.
ROLEX AND GOLF A BASE OF SHARED VALUES
Golf is much more than a sport. It embodies values that make it an experience like no other. Precision, integrity, humility and respect: values deeply rooted in Rolex's identity. For this reason, Rolex has supported golf for almost 60 years. A long-standing commitment that began in 1967 with the legendary champion Arnold Palmer, who was joined by Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, known as "The Big Three". This commitment now extends to leading institutions and events as well as the best players and young talents in the sport.
